If the EPUB has no fixed print pagination, the tool starts with an estimated page count and lets you replace it with the page total shown by your own reader.

How the progress estimate works

The Reading Time tool helps you estimate how long a book will take to read. Based on the book’s word count and an average reading speed, we provide an estimated reading time in minutes.

Keep in mind that individual reading speeds vary. This estimate is a guide to help you choose a book that fits your available time.

Quick Reads

Books under 7,500 words, typically read in under 30 minutes. Ideal for a short break or a quick story.

Steady Reads

Books between 7,500 and 30,000 words, taking about 30 minutes to 2 hours. A good option for an evening read.

Immersive Reads

Books between 30,000 and 75,000 words, requiring 2 to 5 hours of reading time. Plan for a few sittings.

Marathon Reads

Books over 75,000 words, taking more than 5 hours. These are substantial commitments, best for dedicated readers.

Planning Your Reading with the Tracker

The Reading Tracker helps you plan your progress through a book by recording pages, not minutes or sections. You set a current page, total pages, and a daily page goal, and the tracker estimates how many days it will take to finish. The default daily goal is 20 pages, but you can adjust it to match your actual reading pace. The tracker uses the book’s estimated total pages, which you can override if your edition differs.

Setting a Daily Page Goal

Your daily page goal is the number of pages you plan to read each day. The default is 20 pages, but you can set it higher or lower depending on your schedule and speed. For example, if you are reading Gem of neatness — Background and Themes, which has about 14,200 words and an estimated reading time of 62 minutes, the initial page estimate is calculated by dividing the word count by 250 words per page, giving roughly 57 pages. At 20 pages per day, you would finish in about 3 days.

If you have more time, you might set a goal of 30 pages per day and finish in 2 days. If you prefer a slower pace, 10 pages per day would take about 6 days. The tracker lets you adjust the goal and see how it affects your estimated finish date.

Adjusting the Total Page Count

The tracker’s initial page estimate is based on a standard of 250 words per page. If your edition has a different page count, you can replace the total with the number shown in your reading app or physical book. This ensures that your progress and remaining time estimates are accurate for the edition you are actually reading.

For instance, if your edition of Gem of neatness has 60 pages instead of the estimated 57, you can enter 60. The tracker will then use that number to calculate remaining pages and estimated finish days. This flexibility is useful when the catalog’s page count is not available or when you are using a different format.

Understanding Estimated Remaining Time

The tracker estimates remaining time by taking the book’s estimated reading minutes and multiplying by the ratio of remaining pages to total pages. For example, if you have read 20 of 57 pages, you have about 37 pages left. The estimated remaining time is 62 minutes × (37 / 57), which is about 40 minutes. This gives you a rough idea of how much longer you will spend reading.

The estimated finish days are calculated by dividing remaining pages by your daily goal and rounding up. If you have 37 pages left and a goal of 20 pages per day, you will finish in 2 days. If your goal is 10 pages per day, it will take 4 days. You can adjust your goal to see how it affects your finish date.

Tracking Progress Without an Account

The tracker stores your progress history in your browser’s local storage, so you do not need an account. This means your data stays on your device and is not shared. If you clear your browser’s data, your progress will be lost, so you may want to note your progress elsewhere if you switch devices. The tracker is designed to be simple and private, helping you stay on track without extra setup.
